A question on radiator coolant? how often do you refill coolant to maintain its level?

i think my old car 1992 buick consumes more than usual coolant. i buy at least 3 gallons a year and refill its level evrey now and then. i don't see any leaks though because they changed the hose last year and did some tests.

but this morning, just by instinct- i checked and it's almost empty! had i unknowingly driven it for an hour or so, it may have led to problems.

any ideas on this?

One should only have to add coolant a couple of times a year, in early summer and early winter. Water in the radiator is another story. In the summer check it regularly and add more water as needed.

Sounds like you have an internal leak do you notice smoke from the exaust?
the head gasket is probably leaking a bit into the cylinders. You wouldn't see any leaks because it is burning it off. You may be able to see it in the exhaust. I would look whiter than normal.
You should check your water and oil/s every day! first thing in the morning is best for engine oil, and radiator water, if your oil is grey colour on the inside of the filler cap or on the dip stick then you have a water leak into your engine this can be caused from a few areas one is the head gasket you can have it checked by a workshop they can use a handy device which has a liquid which changes colour as it detects gases in your water system its a cheap way to check.

Back to the daily check it is common for welsh plugs to corrode and leak without you knowing and this can also empty your radiator over night or on a trip (just a pin hole) can be enough to cause a loss of water. good luck
Before you do anything drastic buy a new radiator cap and fill the radiator and run it a few days, keeping a check on it and see if that helps.
